Voodoo Medicine or Legitimate Healthcare?
By Brian Feist
Recent controvery over the proposed, and ultimately canceled, chiropractic school at Florida State University brought out some of the most heated - not to mention inane - debate since the November elections. In what was ultimately revealed to be a power struggle between the Florida Legislature and the University Board of Governors over who really runs Floridas universities, archaic attitudes and downright hostility about "alternative" health therapies made headlines. Faculty members threatened to quit, questioning the legitimacy of chiropractic medicine and decrying the school's endorsement of "voodoo" medicine.
Oddly, much of what the medical "establishment" sees as a threat to "traditional" or "allopathic" medicine, is actually a precursor to contemporary medical practice. The healing arts have been around for centuries. What we call "traditional" medicine, with its "pill for every ill" mentality is largely a phenomenon of the last 50-75 years.
In our community we have many fine physicians who provide outstanding medical care. But we also have many practitioners of other healing arts who provide equally outstanding care, including (but not limited to) chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, herbalists, and any number of others. We, at the Gazette, decided to highlight a few of the different "alternative" therapies available within our community. This is not to be interpreted as an endorsement of one philosophy over another. The best healthcare programs likely involve more than one school of thought, but open communication with all of your practitioners is essential.
